Role Definitions

To access this page, navigate to Organization > Role Definitions in the main sidebar.

Role Definitions are reusable templates you attach to members. They define how someone is compensated (equity, cash, or both) and how equity vests over time.

Page Overview

At the top of the page you will see:

  • Create Role button: Opens a guided dialog to create a new role template.
  • Summary cards: Quick counts of your active templates by category:
    • Total Roles
    • Equity
    • Cash
    • Hybrid
    • Other
    • Default (system-provided templates)

Role Categories (Accordion)

Roles are grouped into four expandable sections. Each section shows the number of templates in that category.

Equity Roles

Equity roles define time-based vesting.

Each role card shows:

  • Cliff Period (months): Minimum time required before any equity vests.
  • Total Vesting (months): Full vesting duration.
  • Shares / Month: Monthly accrual rate once vesting is active.
  • Notes (optional): Internal description for your team.

Cash Roles

Cash roles represent paid contractors or consultants.

Each role card shows:

  • Role Name
  • Notes (optional)

Hybrid Roles

Hybrid roles combine cash compensation with an equity vesting schedule.

They use the same equity fields (cliff, vesting duration, shares/month) plus optional notes.

Other Roles

Use this category for custom arrangements that do not fit the standard templates.

Creating a New Role

Select Create Role to open the dialog.

  1. Enter a Role Name (e.g., “Senior Engineer”, “Advisor”, “Intern”).
  2. Choose a Compensation Type: Equity, Cash, Hybrid, or Other.
  3. If you choose Equity or Hybrid, set:
    • Cliff (months)
    • Vesting (months)
    • Shares / month
  4. Add Notes (optional) for internal context.
  5. Select Create Role to save.

Field guidance

  • Cliff is commonly used to protect equity allocation for short tenures.
  • Vesting duration defines the full schedule length (for example, 12–48 months).
  • Shares/month should be aligned with your ESOP pool size and role seniority.

Editing and Deleting Roles

  • Edit: Select the pencil icon on a role card to switch it into edit mode, then Save or Cancel.
  • Delete (Super Admin only): Select the trash icon and confirm deletion in the dialog.
